Our Adoption Story

There are so many facets and twists and turns in our adoption story that it seems odd trying to condense it into a singular blog post!! However, here’s my best shot…

Without realizing it, Rusty and I were separately –  but simultaneously –  thinking and praying about making a major change in our family…

God had planted in each of us individually the desire to adopt and one day, out of the blue, I found myself asking him if he would ever consider adopting.  He immediately said, “Yeah, I think we should, and I know it’s supposed to be a little boy with dark skin”.

So that’s really what it all boils down to.  We have no explanation other than:

God simply said.

And to say that we are overwhelmed and excited would be a definite understatement!

Through a roundabout string of events, we decided on pursuing an adoption in Ethiopia.

We do have an agency in mind, but due to government regulations in Ethiopia, adoptions are moving rather slowly, so once we apply, we are prepared for an 18+ month wait before we will be able to meet our son, and then an additional 1-2 months before he will finally be home.

We have no explanations and, in all honesty, no rational idea how this will all come together!

The price of an international adoption – to any country right now – is usually over $20,000, and Ethiopia is no exception.  We are estimating somewhere between $25-28,000 to bring home our son (partly because there are 2 separate trips to Ethiopia that we will need to make, as determined by the Ethiopian government.)

Although the adoption process is frustratingly slow, it’s often the financial side of things that holds up the process.  We have decided that we are going to start our fundraising before applying with our agency, and we will start the application process when we have reached approximately HALF of our needed funds.  This will allow us to move through the application process much more quickly once we apply, and then we will have 10-12 months to raise the remaining funds (and apply for grants) once we are on the formal waiting list.

…and thanks for joining us on this wild ride!
